What is module cloning and what does it involve?
During this process, all data specific to a particular control unit (e.g., engine or body electronics module) is copied. The module (e.g., ECM, BCM, or ECU) acts like the car’s small brain, managing various systems. If it fails, you cannot simply swap it with one from another car, because each module contains unique data such as the VIN, immobiliser data, and specific settings.
Cloning involves the following steps:
-
Data copying: Special equipment is used to read all information (EEPROM and Flash memory) from the faulty module.
-
Backup: A copy of the original data is made for safety.
-
Data writing: The copied information is transferred to another working module with the same or compatible part number.
-
Testing: The cloned module is tested to ensure it works flawlessly in place of the original.
